Problems
Common shrimp tank problems and quick checks
A practical checklist for losses, failed moults, and unexplained colony decline.
When shrimp struggle, look for stability problems first. Most colony issues trace back to a recent change rather than a mystery disease event. Check what changed in the last few days before adding more products or making more adjustments.
First checks
- Ammonia and nitrite must be zero.
- Review GH, KH, TDS, pH, and temperature for sudden swings.
- Think about recent water changes, remineralisers, plant fertilisers, medications, or filter cleaning.
- Check for hidden aggression from tank mates, especially around moulting.
Patterns matter
Random isolated losses are different from repeated post-water-change losses, unexplained moulting problems, or overnight crashes. Match the pattern to recent maintenance.
