Fish that are safer with shrimp
Community fish options that are usually less risky, with important caveats.
No fish is fully risk free around shrimplets. The safest community setups are still species-only shrimp tanks, but some fish are consistently lower risk than others when the aquarium is mature, heavily planted, and sensibly stocked.
Usually lower-risk options
- Some tiny rasboras
- Pygmy corydoras and other smaller gentle Corydoras species
- Otocinclus in mature algae-rich systems
- Selected pencilfish or small ricefish, with the usual shrimplet warnings
Still not guaranteed
Even gentle fish may eat shrimplets, especially in open tanks with little moss or cover. Mixed tanks should be approached as reduced-risk, not shrimp-safe by default.
