Fish to avoid with shrimp

Many popular freshwater fish are simply too curious, territorial, or predatory to recommend with shrimp colonies. Larger tetras, active livebearers, cichlids, loaches, puffers, and many gourami species can quickly reduce shrimplet survival or harass vulnerable moulting adults.

• Avoid fish that constantly pick at surfaces and hunt moving prey.
• Avoid territorial fish that claim caves, moss clumps, or hardscape zones.
• Avoid treating “it worked for one person” as a general rule.

If colony growth matters, species-only shrimp tanks remain the most predictable choice.
