How to set up a shrimp tank
A practical starter workflow for building a stable freshwater shrimp aquarium.
A successful shrimp aquarium is usually built on maturity, stability, and restraint rather than speed. Start with a fully cycled tank, gentle filtration, reliable water testing, and plenty of surface area from moss, wood, leaf litter, or textured hardscape.
Core setup checklist
- Use a mature filter and confirm ammonia and nitrite are zero before adding shrimp.
- Add mosses, fine-leaved plants, and hiding cover so shrimp can graze and moult without constant disturbance.
- Avoid oversized tank mates and avoid sudden changes in remineralisation, temperature, or maintenance routine.
- Keep a lid where appropriate, especially on warm rooms or open-top nano tanks.
Why maturity matters
New tanks often look ready before they are biologically settled for shrimp. Stable biofilm, consistent mineral balance, and a calm routine are often more important than expensive equipment. Once stocked, feed lightly and let the aquarium settle.
